Documenting a Beautiful New Chapter With Film

There are some clients who become so much more than just subjects in front of the lens, they become part of your story as much as you are part of theirs. That’s exactly what Melissa and her sweet family have been to me over the past few years. From Jojo’s Fresh 48, and newborn session, to the holidays, to his first and second birthday, I’ve had the joy of capturing every major milestone and now, one of the most special ones yet: the moment he prepares to become a big brother.

This maternity session was unlike any I’ve done before. It wasn’t just about documenting Melissa’s radiant glow or Jojo’s playful and mischievous energy (mischief is always guaranteed with toddlers! and so is bribing, patience, and laughter lol) it was about embracing change, both for this beautiful family and for me creatively as a photographer.

For this shoot, we stepped outside the box and tried something completely new: we used a film lens. And let me tell you- it changed everything.

Shooting with film brought a moody, nostalgic vibe to the session that felt so fitting for this quiet, intimate moment before a big life transition. There’s something about the softness of film, the way it captures emotion and light, that felt just right for telling this story.

As photographers, it’s easy to get stuck in the cycle of shooting what’s familiar. Chasing perfection, following trends, sticking to what we know works. But this session reminded me how important it is to play, to explore, and to fall in love with photography all over again. Shooting with film challenged me, pushed me creatively, and gave me the chance to see Melissa’s story through a new lens (literally and figuratively).

And the best part? Melissa, Jojo, and soon-to-arrive baby Marli gave me the perfect story to tell.

Melissa, thank you for trusting me time and time again to capture your most meaningful moments. Watching Jojo grow and now witnessing your joy as you await your baby girl has been the greatest honor.
